The two seasons that matter
Belize has a dry season and a green (wet) season rather than a hot one and a cold one. The dry season runs roughly from late November through April: lower humidity, steadier trade winds, and the clearest water on the reef. The green season runs from June into November, with warm afternoons interrupted by short, heavy showers that usually clear as fast as they arrive.
Water temperature barely changes across the year. You'll swim comfortably in January and in September.
| Period | Weather | Crowds & rates | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mid-Dec to early Jan | Dry, breezy, ideal | Peak — highest rates, longest minimum stays | Book several months ahead |
| Jan to Apr | Dry season at its best | High but manageable outside Easter week | The classic window; February and March book early |
| May to Jun | Hot, humid, first rains | Shoulder — good value | Whale shark season near Placencia falls here |
| Jul to Aug | Warm with afternoon showers | Family travel picks up; rates mid-range | Lobster season opens; August is lively in town |
| Sep to Oct | Wettest, highest storm risk | Lowest rates of the year | September Celebrations make San Pedro fun |
| Nov | Rains taper, water clears | Quiet before the holidays | Our own favourite sleeper month |
Hurricane season, honestly
The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs June through November, with the highest probability of activity from August into October. Most years pass without a direct hit on Belize, but the risk isn't zero and it's worth planning around rather than ignoring.
If you're travelling in those months, buy travel insurance that covers named storms, keep a day of slack around your flights, and read the cancellation terms on your booking before you pay. Ours are published in full on the cancellation policy page.
Sargassum: what it is and when it shows up
Sargassum is the brown floating seaweed that drifts into the Caribbean in varying quantities, generally worst from spring through late summer. Volume changes year to year and week to week, and it affects the windward (east) side of the island.
Resorts and property teams rake the beach, and many properties have docks that take you straight past the shoreline into clear water. If seaweed would genuinely spoil your trip, favour the dry-season months or a property with a good dock and pool.
Dates that change the mood of the island
- ◆Christmas and New Year — busiest weeks of the year, longest minimum stays.
- ◆Easter week — Belizeans holiday too; the island fills and stays full.
- ◆Lobster Fest, mid-summer — San Pedro's biggest food weekend.
- ◆September Celebrations — Belize's independence month, with parades and street parties.
- ◆Costa Maya Festival, late summer — regional pageantry and music in town.
Common questions
- What is the cheapest month to visit Ambergris Caye?
- September and October are consistently the lowest-priced weeks of the year. They're also the wettest and carry the most storm risk, so the saving comes with a genuine trade-off.
- When is the water clearest for diving and snorkelling?
- The dry season, roughly January through April, gives the steadiest conditions and the best visibility on the reef at Hol Chan and beyond.
- Does it rain all day in the green season?
- Rarely. The typical pattern is a heavy afternoon downpour for an hour, then sun again. Full washout days happen but they're the exception.
